Giorgio Morandi encapsulated the spiritual morphing of his small secluded room by obsessively painting common household objects that he stripped of identification and function. These "characters" as he called them, simultaneously reflected the grand scale of Renaissance architecture and the personal scale of his striving for privacy and tranquility amidst the drama of his personal and familial relationships.

In Morandi's simple yet complex paintings, it is within the space between objects as they lean towards and away from each other where his nuanced organic edges speak volumes about his relationships. Perhaps his sisters, so prominent in his life, played a significant part in these dramas too.

Morandi's sisters must have had a powerful influence in the casting of "characters" in his theatrical paintings. Yet in contemporary writings, his sisters are almost never mentioned. I can imagine his sisters in these set piece dramas as incorporeal actors that change persona from one painted scene to another.

In this body of work titled Morandi’s Sisters, I reconstruct these masterpieces at an architectural scale. I use ambient light to diffract forms as a way to articulate the inner tensions of relationship and the vulnerability of his sisters. As tentative subjects within a contemporary drama, his “sisters” shape shift from presence and absence and viewed from a sweet spot disappear entirely from view.
